Sustainable and net-zero-carbon design

Employing a holistic, sustainable design approach to projects

As a growing business, Silcock Leedham understands its role in tackling environmental, economic and social challenges. We have looked to the UN’s blueprint for implementing the corresponding changes. The UN Sustainable Development Goals are central to our company strategy and mission. We focus on doing the right thing: protecting the environment, reducing our carbon footprint and that of our clients and supporting the communities and societies in which we work. We have signed the Pledge to Net Zero, committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for our global operations and developed a carbon reduction plan in line with the Paris Agreement’s targets.

Sustainability in all that we do

We pride ourselves on bringing a holistic, sustainable design approach to projects by using fabric-first ideologies coupled with low-energy or passive-comfort systems supplemented by low- and zero-carbon technologies and on-site renewable energy generation. We inform our designs, strategies and specifications through accurate building energy modelling at each stage of the design process using profiling to identify primary energy streams and dynamic behaviours, enabling maximum operational energy and carbon reduction on each project. This is carried out by zero energy design, our in-house building physics group company.

We not only consider operational carbon but also optimise embodied carbon through our life cycle carbon assessments (LCA) and combine this with life cycle costing (LCC) using the same software. This enables us to consider the carbon impact of developments throughout their life cycle and to help our clients make informed material and energy decisions.

We aim to optimise every commission to deliver the key drivers for our client, whether they are capital, energy, carbon or life cycle based. Our approach encapsulates the complete construction process, rather than focusing on just the mechanical, electrical and public health (MEP) systems, meaning we take ownership of fabric performance standards, fenestration requirements and building orientation to ensure the building efficiently uses natural light, shade, air and heat. We make the local environment and climate work for you through our holistic approach to delivering the net-zero-carbon transformation and a climate-resilient future for all.
