The project

The project involved a complete redesign of the existing medical school building and provision of new clinical skills spaces nearby in the Seebohm Rowntree Building to extend the school’s facilities in York.

The facilities comprise a new problem-based learning suite and collaborative learning space for students on the first floor of the medical school building to give increased academic support from the Health Professions Education Unit, a unit that is at the forefront of developments in health education. The project also provided a significantly expanded and re-equipped anatomy and dry laboratory.

Our contribution

Silcock Leedham was appointed by the university as the mechanical, electrical and public health (MEP) consulting engineer to carry out complete design and technical advisory services from RIBA Stage 0 to RIBA Stage 6.

We worked closely with the university and its principal stakeholders to clearly establish the academic and research brief, working as part of an integrated team.

We worked in seamless collaboration with the contractor and achieved zero defects at the end of the project. The project was highly commended in the Constructing Excellence Award 2020 for Collaborative Working.

Added value

As a trusted member of the University of York technical advisory supply chain and with extensive experience of healthcare and research projects, Silcock Leedham was able to lead the technical discussions regarding interpretation of the project brief and adopt a pragmatic approach to the design solutions.

The research and patient areas of the school were fully HTM-compliant and needed to be visible and tangible for students to appreciate. As per our usual approach, we were open, integrated and collaborative in our sharing of information.
