Client’s Requirements

BAE Systems undertook to re-locate their existing Birtley Manufacturing facility to Washington, Tyne & Wear on the site of the former Dunlop factory. The project consisted of a 30,000m2 shell and core production facility, with associated admin and welfare facilities, external site-wide systems and car parking areas.

Silcock Leedham’s Contribution

Silcock Leedham was appointed directly by N G Baileys to complete RIBA Stage F detailed mechanical and electrical design works for the new facility.

Our design works included:

  • Site-wide Private HV network design and load assessment
  • LV Distribution design and load assessment.
  • Lighting and Small Power installations
  • Fire Alarm and Security Strategies.
  • Thermal Modelling of the entire building including Part L assessment
  • Heating and Ventilation systems.
  • Domestic Water and Above Ground Drainage systems.

Added Value / Unique Selling Points

Our scope of work included the design of the 12 MVA Private High Voltage Network, consisting of 6No Substations distributed across the facility. We liaised directly with the client to determine the electrical loads that would be demanded upon fit-out, to enable the sizing and distribution of the HV Network. Further detailed analysis was required to determine the appropriate LV Distribution systems to provide the client with the flexibility and capacity required.

Due to the sheer scale of the production facility, careful consideration was given to the appropriate ventilation and lighting systems and the co-ordination of the same. Various option appraisals were presented to N G Baileys to get the right balance of costs versus function for our direct client and also with consideration for the end user client.
